MEMBERSHIP FACTS

  • The Portage Township YMCA membership retention rate for five years is 36.85%.      (National YMCA average is 24%)

  • The Portage Township YMCA membership retention rate for thirteen months is 64.67%.      (National YMCA average is 62.7%)


AQUATICS FACTS
 

  • The Aquatics program teaches approximately thirty children a month how to swim.
  • Thanks to a donation from Porter the Portage High School west pool is handicapped accessible.
  • Many people use the YMCA’s time at the pool for rehabilitation purposes.
  • Many people enjoy and benefit from lap swimming during the YMCA pool times.
  • Aquasize helps participants benefit from both the support resistance of the water.

CHILD CARE AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER FACTS
The Child Care and Development Center:
  • provides affordable child care that is curriculum based so children will not only be cared for while the parents are at work or school but will also be ready for success in Kindergarten
  • serves children from two years of age through age five (not yet in Kindergarten)
  • is open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. and serves breakfast in the morning until 7:30 a.m. A hot lunch and two snacks are also served during the day
  • uses a curriculum which supports child-oriented, child-directed activities
  • promotes the YMCA’s core values of caring, honest, respect, and responsibility and diversity is respected and valued
The CCDC Staff:
  • are trained and qualified and the center emphasizes low child-staff ratios, small group sizes, and quality interactions between care givers and children
  • are experienced as they have previously worked in another child care facility, and 55% of our staff have degrees or are currently working on degrees in early childhood education
  • are delighted to offer tours of the center but ask that you schedule a tour so we do not interrupt lunch or nap time and have a staff person available without taking staff time away from the children Please call 762 - YMCA (9622.)

GYMNASTICS FACTS

  • Gymnastics offers classes for ages 18 months to 18 years and offers many ability levels.

  • Our gymnastics program has been around for over 25 years and some of the Portage Y’s gymnastics coaches have been with us for over 15 years.

  • The Y’s gymnastics program participants have won hundreds of individual and team awards and trophies.

  • Many of our gymnasts have grown up in the program and are now coaches for the program.

  • The gymnasts at the YMCA are taught about the four core values and earn value beads when they demonstrate one of the values during class.

  • The Portage YMCA has the most reasonably priced gymnastics class fees in our area.

  • Every gymnast in the gymnastics program is an important member. They have a real sense of being part of a "team".

PRESCHOOL FACTS

In the 3 and 4 year old preschool classes the students:

  • learn their colors and shapes in the first month of school
  • learn to recognize and count from one to ten
  • learn to recognize and write the upper and lower case alphabet
  • do many crafts and hands on activities
  • learn their first and last name and phone number
  • work on pre-writing and logic skills
In the 4 and 5 year old preschool classes the students:

  • learn their first and last name, phone number, address, and birthday
  • learn to read over twenty early reading words
  • work on writing and math skills
  • learn about community helpers
  • learn to tie their shoes and zip their coats
  • host a Mother’s Day Tea.
  • have a graduation with caps and gowns
All the students at the Portage Township YMCA Preschool:
  • learn the days of the week and months of the year.
  • learn the importance of the four core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility
  • learn about cooperation and team work
  • learn from their experiences on cooking, gym, and science days
  • learn from taking several field trips a year
  • learn the letters in sign language when working with the alphabet
  • are community helpers - they are involved in the mitten tree, the giving basket and Relay for Life
  • learn from preschool staff who work with the Portage Kindergarten teachers to help set the curriculum
